The Devil's in the Details: Separating Real SEO Advice From Trickster folklore

Somebody slid into your inbox last week, didn't they? Maybe it was a cold email promising "first-page rankings in 30 days." Maybe a guy at a chamber of commerce mixer whispered that he knew a "secret trick" Google doesn't want you to know about. Either way, you walked away wondering if you're missing out on something.

You're not. Let me put on my halo and walk you through what actually moves the needle — and what's just folklore dressed up in a fancy pitch.

The Ghouls: Tricks That Sound Tempting and Cost You Later

SEO folklore survives because it's sticky. It's easier to sell a shortcut than a habit. Here are the greatest hits of bad advice still haunting small business owners:

Keyword stuffing. The idea that cramming "best plumber Tulsa" into every sentence will trick Google is ancient history. Search engines have understood natural language for years. A page that reads like a thesaurus exploded on it doesn't just rank poorly — it sends customers running.

Link farms and paid link schemes. Someone offers 500 backlinks for $99. Run. Google's systems are built specifically to detect these networks, and when they catch you, recovery can take months or years. I've watched businesses spend more on cleanup than they ever made from the "shortcut."

Doorway pages. These are thin, near-duplicate pages built to rank for a specific keyword and funnel people to the same place. Google explicitly calls these out as spam, and for a local business, they can tank your visibility in the map pack — the one place you actually want to win.

"Submitting your site to Google." This one's harmless but pointless. Google finds pages by crawling links. Anyone charging you for "search engine submission services" is selling you a candle that's already lit.

The Angels: Boring Things That Quietly Win

Here's the part nobody puts on a billboard: the stuff that works is unglamorous, and it compounds.

Helpful, specific content. A page that genuinely answers the question a customer typed in will beat a keyword-stuffed one every time. If you run a HVAC company in Ohio, a plain-English guide to "why my furnace smells like burning when I turn it on" will outperform a decade of tricks.

Fast, mobile-friendly pages. Most of your customers are finding you on a phone while standing in a parking lot. If your site takes eight seconds to load, they're gone before your hero image appears. Speed isn't a hack; it's hospitality.

A complete, accurate Google Business Profile. Hours, photos, services, real reviews with real responses. For local businesses, this is often worth more than anything happening on your website.

Consistency over months, not days. Rankings are earned like a reputation at the local diner — one good interaction at a time, repeated until people trust you.

Your Five-Minute SEO Advice Checklist

Before you act on any tip — from a vendor, a LinkedIn guru, or your cousin's brother-in-law — run it through these questions:

  1. Would I be comfortable explaining this to a Google employee? If the honest answer is "it's kind of a trick," it's a ghoul.
  2. Does it help my customer, or just the algorithm? Real SEO serves both; folklore serves neither.
  3. Is the person promising speed or secrecy? Legitimate strategies aren't secret, and they're rarely instant.
  4. What happens if it fails? Ethical tactics fail gracefully. Schemes leave you with a penalty and a mess.
  5. Can they show me results for businesses like mine? Not screenshots — actual businesses you could call.

The Takeaway

There's no secret handshake. There's just a well-built website, genuinely useful content, and the patience to let good work accumulate. The ghouls want your money; the angels want your rankings. Choose accordingly — and if you're ever unsure, you know where to find me.
